About BIO-IERF
Introduction

Bio-Inspired Engineering Research Facility (BIO-IERF) is a central facility intensively serving academic researchers and postgraduate students in HKUST-GZ for the development of cutting-edge bio-inspired aircraft, drones, and underwater gliders, as well as for research in aerodynamics and fluid mechanics.

The laboratory features an advanced low-turbulence closed circuit wind tunnel covering an area of approximately 250m2, capable of achieving wind speeds exceeding 40m/s with turbulence below 0.2%. Coupled with a 1m diameter three-dimensional attitude turntable support, it provides a reliable, comprehensive, and rich aerodynamic experimental platform for the design, research, and testing of bio-inspired flight and small unmanned aerial vehicles, meeting all measurement requirements for the full range of flight speeds and attitudes of micro aerial vehicles. Additionally, the laboratory also houses a multi-functional low-turbulence closed circuit water tunnel/tank covering an area of approximately 150m2, capable of achieving flow speeds exceeding 1m/s with turbulence below 0.5%, providing a stable and diverse fluid mechanics experimental platform for the design, research, and testing of surface vessels and underwater gliders by switching between water tunnel/tank operating modes.
The laboratory is equipped with a high-frequency three-dimensional three-component particle image velocimetry (3D3C PIV) system, supported by four high-speed cameras with four million pixels and high-energy high-frequency lasers, capable of achieving flow field measurements at a maximum of 550Hz with high spatial resolution, accurately capturing the flow field characteristics around bio-inspired objects, aircraft, or underwater gliders, providing solid and robust raw data for researchers to analyze relevant principles of dynamics. Furthermore, advanced color high-speed cameras, high-speed cooled infrared thermal imager, and other optical measurement equipment constitute the laboratory's kinematic and thermodynamic measurement systems for test objects, while high-frequency six-axis force/torque sensors provide precise mechanical measurement data.
Through the rational combination of reliable experimental platforms and precise measurement equipment, the Bio-Inspired Engineering Research Facility has built a comprehensive measurement system for kinematics, dynamics, thermodynamics, and mechanics, capable of achieving synchronous measurements from multiple perspectives and angles, providing comprehensive measurement data for the design and development of cutting-edge bio-inspired aircraft, drones, and underwater gliders. This system not only offers high-quality and comprehensive bio-inspired system and fluid mechanics teaching and research support for students and professors within the university but also effectively supports the low-altitude economy development of the Greater Bay Area, providing comprehensive experimental services to relevant research institutions and business entities within and outside the region, collectively promoting the rapid iteration and sustainable development of products in the low-altitude economic circle of the Greater Bay Area.
